Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an additional layer of security for your Olivet account. It makes your password easier to manage, and adds extra security by requiring a second factor when logging in from an unknown device or if your account is being attacked. Multi-Factor Authentication is required to be set up after initial login. We recommend completing these steps on your computer with your phone accessible.

Initial Setup Steps

Olivet requires two methods of authentication for security. We strongly recommend the Microsoft Authenticator app for your primary method.

  1. On your phone, download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app Microsoft Authenticator Logo to your phone. Please be mindful of the app you download and install the official Microsoft Authenticator App (shown above; it is a free app).
  1. In the app, tap the “+” icon in the upper-right corner and select “Work or School account.”
  2. On your computer, click “Next” until you reach the QR code.
  3. Scan the QR code with your phone and tap “Approve” when prompted.
  4. Configure a backup method: Follow the prompts to add a second recovery method (ex. Text/SMS).
Do not delete your @olivet.edu account from the Authenticator app after setup or you will lose access to your account.

Set Up the Authenticator App on a New or Transferred Phone

If you transferred data from your old phone, your previous Microsoft Authenticator app configuration may have carried over. Follow these steps to ensure proper setup.

On your phone:

  1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  2. If you see an entry labeled “Azure AD” with your name, tap the gear icon (top right), then choose “Remove Account.” Repeat this for all duplicated entries.

Next, on a computer:

  1. Visit myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. If prompted to use the Authenticator app, click “I can’t use my authenticator app right now” to use your backup method (e.x. text/SMS or email). If you no longer have access to your backup method, contact Olivet IT to reset your authentication setup.

Once logged in:

  1. Go to “Security info” > “Update Info.”
  2. Remove the old Authenticator app.
  3. Click “Add a method” and follow the steps to set up the Authenticator app on your new device.
