Kaltura Virtual Classrom

Kaltura Virtual Classroom is a new utility that has been provided free for 90 days of use by Kaltura to customers that have been affected by the COVID-19 virus. We have enabled the Virtual Classrom functions within our environment and they are available for you to test-drive. Any teaching faculty this semester should be already enabled to be an instructor using this utility, all other users will automatically enter as participants.

Getting started with a test drive of Kaltura Virtual Classroom

  • In a web browser, open https://video.olivet.edu
  • Click Guest User in the upper right
  • Click Login
  • Enter your username (NOT username@olivet.edu) and password
  • Click My Channels
  • Click on "Kaltura Classroom Test 2" or "Kaltura Classroom Test 3"
  • Click Launch Live Room
  • Classroom will launch
    • To end the classroom, Click Back above the classroom stage, or click the back browser button
  • To invite other participants
    • Click on the 3 dots next to Participants in the menu
    • Click Invite
    • Click Copy to copy out the URL for the room
    • Send the URL to other participants

Keep in mind these are experimental rooms:

  • Content is persistent. Anything uploaded or adjusted will remain available within the room to other participants that join. 
  • There is no end time set for these rooms. 
  • All teaching faculty are shared owners of these rooms. 

 

Want to use Kaltura Virtual Classroom for your class?

  • Put in a request with IT to enable a production virtual room
    • Rooms can be created for your department to share
    • An individual room can also be created for individual instructors
  • Please provide the name of the department or instructor. This will be the name that appears on the room, and the Kaltura channel.
  • Provide a list of usernames of individuals that need to be instructors/moderators of the room.

Virtual Classroom is supported on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome, iOS and Android

Using your own Virtual Classroom

  • Request a new room (see bullet point above)
  • In a web browser, open https://video.olivet.edu
  • Click Guest User in the upper right
  • Click Login
  • Enter your username (NOT username@olivet.edu) and password
  • Click My Channels
  • Click on "Virtual Classroom: {Name}" (if you cannot see the channel listed, type "virtual classroom" in the search field)
  • Copy the URL in the browser when the page loads and save this link to access the channel/room directly
  • Click Launch Live Room
  • Classroom will launch
    • To end the classroom, Click Back above the classroom stage, or click the back browser button
  • To invite other participants
    • Click on the 3 dots next to Participants in the menu
    • Click Invite
    • Click Copy to copy out the URL for the room (this URL should not change at all, so copy and save this to share later)
      • Attackers are targeting open meetings. It is very highly recommended to avoid sharing this link in any publicly available​​​​​ space such as social media.
      • Consider adding a password for additional security
    • Send the URL to other participants
